Craig Bellamy denies bullying former Cardiff City underage player

Craig Bellamy has denied allegations that he bullied a former Cardiff academy player.

The Premier League club have launched an investigation after a complaint was made by David Madden over the treatment of his 16-year-old Alfie.

The dad is a former footballer who played in the 1990 FA Cup Final for Crystal Palace. Bellamy has stepped down from his position as U18s coach while the club carry out an investigation. He denies the allegations of bullying made against him.

Madden told the Daily Mail that Bellamy would favour Welsh players over English players. His son Alfie described the former Welsh striker as a "bully".

Madden says he had a meeting with officials at the club to raise concerns about the welfare of his son. The former professional footballer left the meeting disappointed with Bellamy's demeanour, claiming the Welshman acted like a "naughty school boy" and appeared uninterested in the parent's concerns.

Madden added: "I think it should be investigated. I don't think Bellamy has the right mentality to be involved in boys' football".

Bellamy rejects allegations of bullying

The club confirmed they were investigating the allegations while Bellamy released a statement defending himself: “I am aware of allegations that have been made against me via the media.

“I understand the need for Cardiff City to undertake a full investigation in response to these allegations and - at my own suggestion - I have temporarily removed myself from my coaching position in order to co-operate fully with the club’s inquiry.

“Obviously, I am saddened both by the allegations and the manner in which they were made and I categorically refute them.

“I fully expect to return to my coaching role and have sought legal advice as to my position. I will be making no further comment until the full investigation by the club has concluded.”
