Cillian O’Connor set for return against Galway

Cillian O’Connor will be fit to play in Mayo’s first Championship outing against Galway, manager Noel Connolly confirmed.

The Ballintubber man had been suffering with a knee injury since in the county’s National League game against Derry in March.

O’Connor visited a London based consultant to assess the extent of the injury and has proved himself after coming through a challenge match against Cork last weekend.

“Cillian O’Connor is getting back from injury, getting back on the playing field and is a possibility. He played 35 minutes at the weekend and played 15 minutes with his club the week before” Connelly said regarding his rehabilitation.

“He is doing well. He has altered his treatment and he went to visit a consultant in London and changed his medication and his rehab and he has responded really, really well.”

The news comes as Mayo hope to defend their Connacht title, in a replay of last year’s final against Galway next week.

At this stage he is looking well to play at least 40 or 45 minutes of the game. Hopefully, over the next 10 days, if he keeps improving the way he is, he might take part in the full 70 minutes. It’s looking good for Cillian,” said Mayo’s joint manager.

Long-term absentees Andy Moran and Alan Dillon are both training and will be ready for the fixture in Pearse Stadium next Sunday, although a slight calf strain is troubling Donal Vaughan.
