Ciaran Murtagh: New York scare a "wake up call" for Roscommon before Leitrim test

Roscommon's Ciaran Murtagh says the New York scare is a "wake up call" for the team ahead of this weekend's clash against Leitrim.

Roscommon will be aiming for a Connacht semi-final spot against Sligo by beating their neighbours, having narrowly squeezed past New York in their championship opener.

Speaking to Shannonside's Daithi Boland before the Leitrim game at Carrick on Shannon's Pairc Sean MacDiarmada, Murtagh believes their previous result will make sure they don't rest on their laurels after a positive Allianz League adventure in Division 1.

"Everyone expected us to be relegated out of Division 1 but we knew with the quality of players that we had that we could keep our status in Division 1," he said.

"New York was definitely a wake-up call for us and we know we're going to have it twice as hard in Carrick next Sunday, so we're looking forward to Leitrim."

Murtagh admitted that "expectations did go up" after the Division 1 campaign which saw them not only avoid relegation but finish third and manage a playoff semi-final.

"Us as a team try to keep our feet on the ground but outside the camp everyone was building us up and stuff but that doesn't really come into it when you're playing matches. But everyone was expecting us to win easy over in New York but we knew that was never going to happen," he said.
