Cavan's Maggie Farrelly becomes the first woman to referee a senior men's inter-county game

Cavan referee Maggie Farrelly made history last night in Garvaghey as she became the first woman to take charge of a senior men's inter-county football match.

She was in the middle for Fermanagh's Dr McKenna Cup clash with St. Mary's University which saw last year's All Ireland quarter finalists win by 1-13 to 0-14.

The Laragh native has previously been involved in men's senior inter-county games. She was a sideline official in an Allianz League game between Dublin and Kerry in Croke Park last year.

Her first experience of officiating in an senior inter-county game came in 2013 in a Dr McKenna Cup game between Derry and Tyrone when she ran the line. She has also risen to the top of the women's game has previously refereed a Ladies All Ireland Final.

Last year she told the GAA's official website, that it was her dream to take charge of an inter-county game. "Of course it’s a dream and you have to have the belief in yourself that you can do it. It’s a case of sticking with the plan.”
