'It's a bit of fun' | Stephen Coen on Kilcummin GAA wrestling drill

The video of Kilcummin GAA’s training session is nothing more than a way of getting ‘lads warmed up’, according to Stephen Coen, although the Mayo man admitted he wouldn't be an advocate of the drill.

A WhatsApp video of the Kerry club’s training session, which involves players wrestling on the ground being egged on by the person filming, was sent to Off The Ball.

The video can be seen below.

The Mayo footballer was speaking on Friday’s Off The Ball and reacted to the unorthodox training method seen in the video.

“Definitely the conditions are similar to what it’s like in Mayo at the minute. The pitches are in bad shape. I’ve seen those little drills before. It’s a bit of fun.

“It’s kind of [used] to get lads warmed up. It’s working on the upper body a small bit. Interesting clip to say the least,” Coen said.

While the Hollymount Carramore club man didn’t claim to have partaken in any similar drills, he wasn’t surprised by the footage.

“It probably does [happen often at training]. Not to say that it’s right but yeah, around the country that happens a good bit. I wouldn’t be an advocate of it now or anything.

“Those little drills - players get respect for each other out of that. Look, every manager has their own method of madness,” Coen commented.

A spokesperson for the club has told Off The Ball that they do not condone the behaviour seen in the video and apologised to anyone who took offence to it.

Their statement can be read below.

"Kilcummin GAA are aware of this video and are dealing with it internally. We do not condone any of the content within it, and are apologising to our club members. We also apologise to anyone who this video may have caused offence to."
