Most camogie players and ladies footballers feel ‘overwhelmed’, according to the new Women’s Gaelic Players’ Association (WGPA).
Executive member Anna Geary says a survey of female Gaelic games players contained “drastic” findings which need special attention.
“The purpose of the Association is to improve the playing experience both on and off the pitch,” the Cork camogie captain told Newstalk's Breakfast today, ahead of the WGPA's formal launch this afternoon.
“We would have carried out a survey during the year ... 600 players would have taken that survey.
“One of the drastic findings in the survey was that almost 80 per cent of people that are playing felt overwhelmed and over 60 per cent stressed at times.
“We’re there now to support player welfare needs,” outlined the 2014 All-Ireland winner, who added that “official recognition (from Croke Park) is going to take time.”
On the thorny issue of paying players, Geary said that with pay for play “you really are losing what the GAA is all about”, but insisted that “nobody should be out of pocket” either.
