AUDIO: Gavin going for a more 'solid' strategy - Horan

James Horan says Jim Gavin is clearly trying to implement a more conservative approach for the Dubs this season.

But the former Mayo manager reckons the Dublin supremo shouldn’t get hung up on their shock defeat by Donegal in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final, when Jim McGuinness’ counter-attacking tactics undid the then All-Ireland champions.

“I think you saw last weekend against Cork Dublin trying to play a more solid formation at the back,” Horan told Dave McIntyre on Off The Ball.

“They were trying to set up so that any counter attacks, they can deal with.

“Jim is a very smart man. It’s important they don’t over-analyse over over-hype their defeat by Donegal last year.”

And Horan wouldn’t be surprised to see some new Blue faces to emerge in the league and contest for a place in Gavin’s champions XV.

“Jim is definitely looking for new guys to break into the team,” Horan added. “These two guys [Emmet O Conghaile and Shane Carthy] are really, really pushing.”
