Are GAA media bans and siege mentalities really beneficial?

Earlier this week at a Croke Park media launch, Armagh player Kevin Dyas was prevented from speaking to journalists.

Part of a media ban by the Armagh camp, it follows what they believe was unfair coverage of the pre-match brawl with Cavan.

They are not the only county setup with some form of media ban and while a siege mentality can foster team spirit, can it also be counter-productive?

Sports psychologist and former Armagh player Enda McNulty joined us on the show tonight and he believes an us against the world mentality "doesn't have a long term shelf life in terms of driving, motivating and inspiring people to go above and beyond at that level."

However, he thinks coaches and managers use it as a short term boost but also spoke about how his Armagh team dealt with the media.

"Looking back, I would say it's naive and as a team in some cases, we were naive. I wish in hindsight we were more mature in our approach. We only now realize how important the media is, how important the outside world is to promote our games and to develop ourselves as human beings," he said, although he felt that Oisin McConville was brilliant at dealing with the media and criticism.
