POLL: Should the Confederate flag be banned from GAA grounds?

Sport Against Racism Ireland (SARI) have called on the GAA to ban the Confederate flag from GAA grounds.

The flag is associated with Cork's GAA fans in Ireland, although the flag has been beset by controversy over its deeper, historical meaning in recent weeks.

The debate was thrust into headlines when nine people were killed in a church in Charleston, North Carolina by a gunman. Dylann Roof was arrested the day after the murders. A racist manifesto, written by Roof, which also contained pictures of him with the flag were found online in the following days.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner this morning, SARI’s international and education officer Ken McCue said: “We’re calling on the Cork County Board to issue a statement asking the fans to desist because it’s a flag of hatred. It sends out the wrong signals. We would call on stewards to be vigilant to make sure it doesn’t appear in grounds."

A version of the flag was seen in the terraces in Fitzgerald Stadium last week, as Cork drew with Kerry in the Munster Football Final.
