Anthony Nash wants the "Nash rule" put to bed once and for all

In many ways it is a testament to Anthony Nash's excellence that he could have a rule change ostensibly named after him.

The Cork goalkeeper has become renowned for his penalty-taking technique but could pay the price for his unique skill as a proposed rule change means "the ball can be no closer than 20 metres from the goal-line when it's struck".

Nash admits that he is "sick about talking about" the situation. But this week he shared his opinion with our own Diarmuid 'Gizzy' Lyng.

"I'm not the first person to have done it and I won't be the last person. If they come with an idea whereby it's the best solution for hurling, then I've no issue following those rules. But the fact that they're calling it my motion is one thing. I wouldn't consider it my motion in any manner of terms. Any fella, when I stand in goal for a '21, is within 15 or 16 yards by the time he strikes it. Just because I throw it higher than anybody else, I might only be gaining an extra yard or two on anyone else," Nash stated, who is frustrated that people have latched onto the issue, despite the fact that he has been taking penalties like that "since he was 18."

"Listen, I've taken sliothars to the neck, chest and head from fellas closer in and unfortunately it's a part of hurling. If a fella doubles on the ball on the edge of the square, the ball is travelling at a higher speed than any of my strikes. I just want it put to bed."
