'Fenton will supersede what Brian Mullins has done' | Charlie Redmond

It's fair to say that Brian Fenton is already in the pantheon of great Dublin midfielders. According to Charlie Redmond though, he will surpass the man at the top Brian Mullins.

Speaking on Thursday’s OTB Live Drive for Five, the Dublin legend said Fenton has made a massive impact on this Dublin team.

"He is the most irreplaceable player in the Dublin team, you could bring James [McCarthy] in but he won't bring you the same thing that Fenton brings to the game.

"If we lost Stephen Cluxton we could bring Evan Comerford in, every other position is catered for bar midfield," he said.

Redmond feels that even at this stage of his career he is up there with one of the greatest Dublin footballers in Brian Mullins.

"He has been phenomenal in what he has done having never lost a Championship game.

"What he has achieved and what he is going to achieve further down the line is absolutely enormous.

High praise

"I never thought I would ever see a better Dublin midfielder than Brian Mullins, but even in a short time he's shown he is up there with him.

"He is going to supersede what Brian Mullins has done," the former Dublin forward stated.

Redmond wasn't the only one who had high praise for the Dublin midfielder, former Mayo footballer David Brady said he has been blown away by his rise.

"When he came into Pat Gilroy's side he wasn't even regarded as a club footballer, but the game has developed for him.

"It's more of an athletic game which he is ideally suited to, his ball handling skills, his peripheral vision and knowledge of who is around him.

"I do think there are players to replace Michael Darragh MacAuley but as regards Fenton, it's a major ask to have someone slip and do the all in compassing job that he does," Brady said.
