Dasilva's delight as Newcastle crash out

Brentford's remarkable Carabao Cup campaign took another twist tonight after they dumped out Newcastle United.

The Championship club - currently in fourth place in the second tier - netted their winner through Josh Dasilva in the second half as they booked their place in the last four.

It represents the fourth occasion in this run alone that they have overcome Premier League opposition. West Brom, Southampton, Fulham and now Newcastle have all come unstuck against Thomas Frank's side.

It's the first time the club have reached the semi-final stage of a major competition - and the significance of the occasion was not lost on goalscorer Dasilva, who spoke to Sky Sports after the match.

"We knew going into the game it was going to be difficult, we knew we wanted to make history so I think that the boys did really well," he said in the aftermatch.

"We stuck to the gameplan, they're a Premier League side so we knew it was going to be difficult, but the boys dug deep and we got the result."

After narrowly missing out on a place in the top tier themselves last season, Brentford have shown good form so far in this year's campaign and currently lie fourth in the table.

Dasilva said: "We missed out on automatic last season by two points and we lost out in the play-off final so I don't think we're too far off, obviously now we've beaten four [[Premier League] teams, just that belief we can do it, obviously there's a good bunch of lads so yeah, it's good to beat the Premiership teams.

"We just keep our feet on the ground because we know there are big teams in the semis, so we'll just wait until the draw comes out and see who we get."

For Newcastle boss Steve Bruce, it was an evening of real disappointment.

"It's good to get to a quarter-final but obviously not great when you get a great opportunity like we've just had. So there's a lot of disappointed people today because we've missed a big opportunity."
