Clubs 'missing a trick' by not appointing Roy Keane as manager | O'Neill

Martin O'Neill has said that clubs are 'missing a trick' by not appointing Roy Keane as manager.

The former Republic of Ireland boss - who had Keane as his assistant during his spell in international management - was speaking in his role as a pundit with Sky Sports ahead of today's Old Firm derby between Celtic and Rangers.

Keane's name has been linked with the vacant post at Parkhead, following the departure of Neil Lennon after a poor season.

Chasing a tenth title in a row, Celtic saw Rangers storm clear and clinch the Scottish Premiership crown for the first time in ten years in comprehensive fashion.

John Kennedy has been placed in interim charge as the club search for a replacement, with a whole host of names being linked to the role.

Eddie Howe and Rafa Benitez are among those candidates being floated in the media, but Keane's name is also in the mix.

It would represent an interesting appointment given Keane's history with the club, where he finished his playing career in 2006.

"What you see is what you get from Roy," O'Neill said, while also ruling himself out of any return to the dugout with the Glasgow club.

"My own personal view is that I think owners and Chief Executives are missing a trick by not thinking about him as becoming a manager, that's my view.

"I think he has learned a great, great deal and I think he is very, very capable of taking a top job."

O'Neill did not mention any other names but said the club needs to appoint someone who can help them stop Rangers recent rise under Steven Gerrard.

"There is time for them to develop, you have to think about winning again, and who would give you the chance to go and win again.

"Rangers are on the up at this moment, they're entitled to, they haven't been there in a long, long time.

"So who can give Celtic to get that momentum again, to go and win."
