With the news that Russia’s athletics stars have been banned from competing, that Rio is still woefully under prepared to host the events, and that the sailors will literally be ploughing their boats through lagoons filled with bacteria-resistant super bugs, Samsung has released its new Olympic-themed advert, reminding us we are a global community.
The 90-second advert was created by the Leo Burnett advertising agency in Chicago, and features a mixture of 15 national anthems from around the world blended harmoniously into one song. Opening with a young Australian girl singing the Botswanan song, before passing on her Samsung device to man halfway across the world singing Advance Australia Fair.
The footage is also mixed with shots of six Olympians belting out the new song, called The Anthem, including US track-and-field star Alysia Montano and British diver Tom Daley.
“I’m thrilled to be among the talented and strong-minded athletes featured in Samsung’s ‘International Anthem,’ and to share my personal story of defying barriers with the world leading up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games," Daley said in a statement. "I’ve overcome several obstacles throughout my athletic career, but I’m thankful for these challenges because they have made me stronger and even more determined to succeed."
The 31st Summer Olympic Games will open in Rio in just over two weeks, followed by the Paralympic Games on September 7th. You can watch Samsung’s advert in full below:
