WATCH: Chinese diver proposes to team-mate at Olympic medal ceremony

Chinese athlete He Zi won silver in the 3m springboard on Sunday, and while she didn't get to stand atop the podium to claim gold, she and fellow athlete Qin Kai grabbed all the headlines after the event.

Shi Tingmao, who claimed the top spot, and the rest of the crowd at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre looked on as Qin dropped to one knee to ask He to marry him as she was on her victory lap.

According to AFP, He said that Qin "made a lot of promises, but I think the thing that touched me the most is I think this is the guy I can trust for the rest of my life."

She also added that she wasn't caught completely unawares that something along these lines may be happening, given that Qin was reciting some lines and practicing a speech of some description earlier that day.

"This morning in his room he was reciting something and I didn’t notice (what it was)," said He. "I asked him and he said he was singing."

There was a positive response for Qin, as He agreed to the proposal. The pair have been dating since 2010, and gold medal winning team-mate Shi said that she was happy for them: "Both of them have gone through a lot. It is a very special moment for them."

Qin was also competing at the Games this year, and claimed bronze for China in the men’s 3m synchronised springboard.

This isn't the only proposal that has been seen at the Games this year either, after Marjorie Enya asked Brazil's Isadora Cerullo to marry her following elimination from the rugby tournament.
