The Kick Off: There's a Croke Park double-header to look forward to

There are quarter-final places up for grabs today at Croke Park.

Sligo take on Tyrone and Donegal play Sligo in their qualifier double-header.

The opening game will be the Round 4B contest between beaten Connacht finalists Sligo and Mickey Harte's Tyrone, who have built up momentum through the qualifiers once again this summer

Throw-in is at 4pm.

That will be followed by the intriguing contest between Donegal and Galway.

 

That match will throw-in at 6pm at Croke Park.

There is also quarter-final action today in the All-Ireland Minor championship.

Derry will take-on Longford at Brewster Park from 2pm, while Cavan and Kildare will meet at Páirc Tailteann in Navan at 6.30pm.

 

The controversial Liberty Insurance Senior Camogie Championship playoff takes place today at Semple Stadium.

After refusing to take part in a coin-toss, Clare and Dublin will finally get their chance to settle their differences on the field of play this afternoon, with the winner advancing to a quarter-final clash with Wexford on Monday.

The action is underway in Thurles at 2pm.

That match will be followed by the first of this year's All-Ireland Camogie quarter finals as Cork and Tipperary do battle at Semple Stadium from 4pm.

 

In the TG4 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, Mayo take on Tyrone today in Ballinamore at 2pm.

 

RACING

The racing continues in Galway today as the festival enters into its sixth day at Ballybrit.

The feature event is the Ladbrokes' Handicap Hurdle at 3.15pm, with Tony Martin looking to continue his excellent run of form this week.

The trainer bagged a hat-trick yesterday and he saddles the well-fancied Pyromaniac today in the Grade B feature.

The action begins today at 2.40pm.

 

Meanwhile, the big race at Glorious Goodwood today is the Qatar Nassau Stakes, with over £340K on offer to the winner of the Group 1 fillies race.

David Wachman's brilliant 3-year-old, Legatissimo will be looking to bounce back from runners-up finishes in her last two starts as she looks to add to her 1000 Guineas win at Newmarket earlier in the season.

Aidan O'Brien will also be well represented with two runners, Diamondsandrubies and Wedding Vow.

 

GOLF

Michael Hoey is in action in the last-16 of the inaugural Paul Lawrie Match Play championship in Aberdeen today.

After impressive performances this week, the Ulsterman is taking-on Grégory Havret of France with the winner advancing to a quarter-final match later this afternoon.

 

Kevin Phelan is five shots off the lead at the start of the third round at the Madeira Islands Open in Portugal.

Phelan will resume from 6-under par after a second consecutive round of 69 yesterday.

England's Sam Walker and Sweden's Pontus Widegren share the lead on 11-under.

 

SOCCER

Celtic begin the defence of their Scottish Premiership title today.

The Hoops are targetting a fifth cosecutive league crown as they play host to Ross County.

Kick-off at Parkhead is at 12.45pm.

 

There is also one game this evening in the Airtricity League Premier Division.

Limerick FC host Sligo Rovers at Markets Field, where the action gets underway at 6.30pm.
