The Kick Off: Duffy defends Gaelic football against doomsday predictions

GAA

Director General Paraic Duffy has defended inter-county football and said that they will not remodel the GAA 'to make everybody equal because then you kill it.'

He insisted that the GAA are not going to split up Dublin into five or six counties or Kerry into two or three. He also said that the achievement of Sligo and Fermanagh in getting as far as August had been overlooked in all the doomsday talk over the elite counties leaving the rest behind.

SOCCER

Angel Di Maria's move away from Old Trafford was confirmed last night as he signed for Paris St. Germain for a fee of €65m.

Elsewhere, Dutch aristocrats Ajax were knocked out of the Champions League in stunning fashion last night, losing 5-4 on aggregate to Austrian outsiders Rapid Vienna.

Having secured a seemingly positive 2-2 draw in Vienna last week, Ajax were turned over 3-2 in their own lair last night, with Louis Schaub grabbing the winner with 13 minutes remaining.

RUGBY

Ireland forwards coach Simon Easterby says that Cian Healy's recovery from his neck operation last May is progressing well and that they still hope he will be fit for the World Cup.

Last week's reports suggested that Healy was in severe danger of missing the competition and Easterby refused to say whether these were 'over the top'.

GOLF

Rumours are abounding that Rory McIlroy will make a shock return in time to defend his USPGA title in Whistling Straits this month.

It was previously thought that he would not recover in time for the event.

Notwithstanding the talk of his return, the player's representatives are refusing to say whether or not he will be fit, and are instead repeating the stock mantra that he is making 'solid progress'.

RACING

Racing gets underway at Sligo this evening at 5.30. Elsewhere, the 142nd Dublin Horse Show commences this morning at the RDS.
