SOCCER
Manchester United have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of Spanish international, Sergio Ramos.
The defender is believed to have told Real Madrid that he wants to leave the club in favour of a move to Old Trafford.
In an effort to force Madrid's hand, United have tabled a bid of €40M for the 29-year-old World Cup winner.
Meanwhile, United have also handed a new deal to England defender Phil Jones, who has signed a new extension that will keep him at Old Trafford until at least June 2019.
Earlier, Arsenal completed the capture of goalkeeper Petr Cech from Chelsea.
The 33-year-old has agreed a four-year contract with the Gunners after the two clubs agreed a fee, believed to be around 10 million pounds.
TENNIS
It has been business as usual on the opening day of this year's Wimbledon.
Top seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams are both safely through to the second round after straight sets wins.
There were also comfortable victories for the likes of Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams, Ana Ivanovic and Stan Wawrinka.
But 2002 men's champion, Lleyton Hewitt was beaten on his final appearance at Wimbledon.
OTHER SPORTS
Eurosport have won the pan-European television rights for the Olympic Games from 2018 to 2024.
The €1.3Bn means that there is now a doubt as to how much of the 2020 and 2024 Olympics will be available on free-to-air TV in Ireland.
