The Final Whistle: Offaly hurling boss steps down

GAA

Brian Whelahan has stepped down as Offaly senior hurling manager.

The legendary wing-back has informed the County Board that he will not be seeking a third year in charge of the side following this year's disappointing performances that saw them lose to Laois in the Leinster quarter-finals before suffering a 20-point loss to Clare in the All-Ireland qualifiers.

Senior football boss Pat Flanagan will meet with a review committee next week to discuss his future.

Meanwhile, the Clare County Board has confirmed that senior hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald and senior football manager Colm Collins are to remain in their roles for next season.

And the Limerick County Board has also confirmed that they want TJ Ryan to continue as their senior hurling manager, despite the disappointment of last weekend's championship exit at the hands of Dublin.

SOCCER

Shamrock Rovers have confirmed the capture of Damien Duff.

The former Irish international has agreed an 18-month contract that will see him line-up with Rovers at the Tallaght Stadium up until the end of the 2016 season.

However, the 36-year-old will not be fit in time for Rovers' upcoming Europa League qualifiers against Norwegian side, Odd Ballklubb.

Meanwhile, Manchester City have announced the signing of Raheem Sterling from Liverpool.

The 20-year-old has become the most expensive signing in English football after agreeing a five-year deal in a move that is set to cost City £49M.

BOXING

Andy Lee has confirmed that he and his promoter Adam Booth are in talks with Katie Taylor about the Olympic champion fighting on the undercard to his WBO middleweight title defence at Thomond Park.

Tickets went on sale today for Lee's fight against Billy Joe Saunders in his home town on September 19th.

He spoke to Off The Ball tonight about the upcoming fight:

PARALYMPICS

13-year-old Nicole Turner continues to impress on her debut at the IPC World Championships in Glasgow.

Turner recorded another Personal Best as she finished in 5th place tonight in her 100m SB-6 Breaststroke final in a time of 1 minute 48.07 seconds.

Meanwhile, Ellen Keane also produced a lifetime best as she also claimed 5th in a tight finish to the 100-metre SB-8 Breaststroke final.
