The Final Whistle: Martin O'Neill's immediate future seems to be done and dusted

SOCCER

Leicester City's pursuit of Martin O'Neill has come to an end after the club announced the appointment of Claudio Ranieri as their new manager.

The former Chelsea boss is set to return to the Premier League after an 11-year absence after agreeing a three-year contract to replace Nigel Pearson, who was sacked just last month.

The Italian's arrival at Leicester brings an end to the speculation linking O'Neill with a return to the role that he held from 1995 to 2000.

Manchester United's summer recruitment drive has continued after announcing the capture of both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin for a combined €54M.

The two midfielders have joined Dutch winger Memphis Depay and Italian defender Matteo Darmian as the new arrivals this summer and all four players have joined United on their pre-season Tour of the USA.

However, veteran striker Robin van Persie is on his way out of Old Trafford. He is expected to be unveiled by Turkish club Fenerbache tomorrow morning.

It remains 'as you were' at the bottom of the Airtricity League First Division table.

It finished 1-1 in tonight's meeting of the two bottom clubs in the league as Cabinteely FC scored an injury-time equaliser against basement side Waterford United at Stradbrook.

GAA

The GAA has confirmed the venues and times for the next round of the All Ireland football qualifiers.

This Saturday will see the two Round 3B matches down for decision.

Tyrone's trip to face Tipperary in Semple Stadium will get underway at 3pm, while Galway host Derry at Pearse Stadium from 5pm.

Westmeath's first game in this year's qualifier series will be against Fermanagh on Saturday, the 25th of July at 5pm in Kingspan Breffni Park.

That same evening, the other Round 4A qualifier will see Kildare face the losers from this weekend's Munster final replay at 7pm in a neutral venue.

Meanwhile, the line-up for the hurling quarter finals was also confirmed after the weekend's action.

After Saturday's double-header at Semple Stadium, the quarter-finals will also be held back-to-back in Thurles on Sunday, July 26th.

Waterford's match-up against Dublin will be the opening match at 2pm, before the clash of Cork and Galway from 4pm.

Irish Paralympian, Darragh McDonald has claimed a bronze medal in the men's S-6 400m Freestyle final at the IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow tonight.

Meanwhile, 13-year-old, Nicole Turner claimed an impressive 5th place finish in the Women's S-6 400m Freestyle Final in what is her first World Championships appearance.
