The Final Whistle: Damien Duff's League of Ireland bow had a happy outcome

SOCCER

Liverpool have made it two wins from two at the start of the new Premier League season after a narrow 1-0 win over Bournemouth at Anfield.

Christian Benteke scored his first goal for the Reds on his home debut to earn his side all three points.

The Belgian striker was on hand at the backpost to prod home a cross from Jordan Henderson in the 26th minute - but replays showed that the goal should have been disallowed for an offside by Philippe Coutinho, who appeared to interfere with play.

In the Airtricity League, Dundalk have opened up a 10-point lead at the top of the table.

Two goals from Daryl Horgan helped Stephen Kenny's side to a 4-1 win over St Pat's tonight at Oriel Park.

That result, coupled with Shamrock Rovers' 3-0 victory over Cork City, has allowed the defending champions to take a giant step towards retaining their title.

Earlier, Rovers moved up to third place as goals from Gavin Brennan, Danny North and Brandon Miele secured all three points for Pat Fenlon's side, who were able to hand Damien Duff his League of Ireland debut for the final few minutes at the Tallaght Stadium.

Elsewhere, Sligo Rovers registered back-to-back wins for the first time this season as they defeated Derry City 1-0 at The Showgrounds.

Bray Wanderers were 3-1 winners over Bohemians while it finished 1-1 between Galway United and Drogheda United and Limerick FC and Longford Town played out a 3-3 draw.

In tonight's only game in the First Division, UCD came from a goal down beat beat Athlone Town 3-1 at Belfield.

Mayo forward Mickey Conroy has confirmed that he will miss the rest of this year's Championship season through injury.

The experienced attacker suffered a dislocated shoulder during a club match over the weekend, which rules him out of the rest of the inter-county season.
