SOCCER

Shamrock Rovers have goalkeeper Craig Hyland to thank for keeping them in the hunt for a place in this season's Europa League.

The Hoops battled their way a scoreless draw in the first leg of their first round qualifier against FC Progrès Niederkorn in Luxembourg tonight.

Pat Fenlon's side hit the woodwork during the opening half, but their challenge wilted during the second half as Hyland produced a string of crucial saves to keep a clean sheet ahead of the return leg at the Tallaght Stadium next week.

Also in football, Leicester have sacked manager Nigel Pearson, despite helping the club to avoid Premier League relegation.

In a statement, the club said that a working relationship between Pearson and the board was "no longer viable".

Leicester dramatically won seven of their last nine top flight matches at the end of the season to stay up.

TENNIS

Former Wimbledon champions Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray have all advanced to the second-round after straight-sets wins today.

Nadal defeated Brazilian Thomaz Belluci, Murray beat Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin and Federer began his bid for a record eighth men's singles title with an emphatic win over Bosnian, Damir Dzumhur.

Elsewhere, defending women's champion Petra Kvitova took just over half an hour to blast her way into the second round with a straight sets victory.

But the first big upsets of this year's Championship also took place in the Women's draw.

Last year's runner-up, Eugenie Bouchard was beaten in straight sets by unseeded Chinese player, Ying-Ying Duan and women's third seed Simona Halep also suffered a surprise early exit.

GOLF

Irish amateur Paul Dunne has qualified for next month's Open championship at St Andrews.

The 22-year-old, who plans to turn professional later this year, won today's qualifying tournament at Woburn, finishing three shots clear of the field on nine under par.
