Tear gas fired as England fans clash with police

England football fans have clashed with police in the French town of Marseille ahead of the beginning of the European Championships on Friday evening.

Police officers in riot gear have been seen marching towards hundreds of English fans who then ran down the street.

The group of England supporters, who had reportedly been drinking for most of the day, threw bottles at the police, who used tear gas to disperse them.

The clashes started at around 6.20pm French time.

On Thursday, an England supporter suffered a head injury after being hit across the head with a wooden chair in a brawl.

Mark Roberts, head of soccer policing in Britain, said England fans had been in the city "without issue" on Thursday evening until locals arrived.

"At around midnight, there was a short confrontation where a group of approximately 70 local youths approached a pub where England fans had congregated," Mr Roberts said.

"This was quickly dealt with by French police and one English supporter was arrested."
