A Team GB athlete has been robbed at gunpoint, according to a number of reports.
The athlete in question, who has not yet been named, was apparently held up with a weapon while out in Rio de Janeiro to enjoy a night on the town.
The Guardian report that the person was extremely shaken, but not seriously hurt in the incident which took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Speaking to BuzzFeed, a representative of Team GB said that there had been "an incident of theft involving a Team GB athlete returning to their accommodation. All members of our delegation, including the individual concerned, are accounted for, and are safe and well."
On Wednesday, an e-mail was sent out to members of the Team GB Olympics squad to let them know that they should do their best to stay within the safety of the Olympic village. The letter noted that "following a significant security incident overnight," athletes should be careful when going out in Team GB kit, as they may be targeted as a result.
"Avoid leaving the village after dark in anything other than British Olympic Association/Local Organising Committee/UK Athletics transport," noted the mail, adding that "taxis cannot be considered safe late at night. If you are planning on going out after dark and have no way of returning other than via taxi, do not go out."
It also added that Rio can not be considered a safe environment and that "the level of crime has spiked in the last few days."
The news comes after two American Olympic swimmers were removed from a flight to the US by authorities investigating claims they were robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro.
