RTÉ defend decision not to ask Sonia O'Sullivan about OCI ticketing scandal

RTÉ has faced criticism after analyst and Olympic Council of Ireland committee member Sonia O'Sullivan was not asked about the ticketing scandal which has enveloped the organisation during the Olympic Games.

Last week, OCI President Pat Hickey was denied bail and sent to a maximum security prison in Rio de Janeiro, while on Sunday, a judge in Brazil ordered the seizure of passports from acting president Willie O'Brien and vice-president John Delaney as the investigation into the illegal sale of tickets continues.

The fallout from the incident has seen Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross announce an independent inquiry into the events which have rocked the OCI.

Despite being a committee member of the OCI, O'Sullivan was not quizzed on the matter during her time as a panellist with RTÉ for the Olympics.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the broadcaster said: "Sonia O'Sullivan has been contracted by RTÉ Sport solely in the role as athletics analyst on our sports coverage for many years, including the Rio Olympics, and offers invaluable insight into athletics performances.

"RTÉ have put a wide number of questions directly to OCI regarding recent events through official channels."

Representatives for Sonia O'Sullivan have yet to respond to a request for comment.
