Orla Barry clinches silver in F57 discus

Orla Barry has claimed silver in the final of the F57 discus in Rio this afternoon.

The 25-year-old produced a wonderful third throw and finished in second spot with an effort of 30.06 to leave her behind only Nassima Saifi of Algeria.

The result makrs an improvement on her bronze medal which she won in this event four years ago in London.

"I’m delighted; absolutely delighted," she said after the event. "I have done one better this time. There were doubts during the week so to throw over thirty meters is fantastic, any day you can through over thirty meters is a good day. I am delighted to come through in the end."

She added: "My coaches, and my family; without them, I wouldn’t be here at all. Part of this medal belongs to all of them.

"I always said after Rio I would take it each year at a time and with world championships coming up, I will take a break now and concentrate on them."

The medal is Ireland's eighth of the Games and means they reach their pre-tournament target.

This is Barry's third Paralympics representing Ireland, after flying the flag for the country in Beijing and of course London.
