The Stade de Lyon, which will host Sunday’s knockout tie between Ireland and France, has a capacity of 59,000 and the FAI has admitted that the vast majority of the crowd will be supporting France.
Ireland’s football association is currently in negotiations with UEFA to try and secure additional tickets for the second round game.
3,500 tickets were bought by Ireland supporters when they went on sale in February and an extra 1,000 went online today through UEFA, while the FAI also secured 104 more.
Today’s batch sold out incredibly quickly with fans reporting that they failed to get any despite being online when the tickets were released.
Thousands of Ireland supporters are travelling to the French city even as flight prices sky rocket.
The FAI has said it is negotiating with UEFA to try and secure additional tickets but Ian Mallon, of the association, admits it will be tough.
“The majority of tickets for Sunday's match were initially sold to French supporters during the general sale at the beginning of the year,” Mr Mallon said.
“The problem with this game is that it’s against the host nation and the host nation have snapped up the vast majority of the tickets.”
John Delaney, CEO of the FAI said, "I would like to thank all of our supporters for their tremendous support and I am as proud of the supporters as I am of the team. They have made their country proud and have been the greatest ambassadors.
"We will be doing everything we can to get as many Irish supporters into Sunday's game against France in Lyon."
