Evening top 5: McGuinness resigns from Stormont Executive; Apollo House occupiers agree to vacate; U2 set for Croke Park

Martin McGuinness resigns as Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister

Martin McGuinness has resigned as Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland.

He announced his intention to step down earlier on Monday.

It comes amid a scandal around the Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI) scheme, which was designed to encourage businesses to replace older heating sources with more eco-friendly alternatives.

First Minister Arlene Foster has refused to stand aside during an investigation into the scheme.

Apollo House occupiers to vacate ‘once suitable accommodation is found’

The occupiers of Apollo House in Dublin say they will leave the building once suitable accommodation is available.

The group has agreed to stop taking in new residents - however it is unlikely the thirty residents currently in the building will have left by the court-ordered deadline of January 11th.

At a press conference this evening, Home Sweet Home spokesperson Brendan Ogle said he is "absolutely certain" the current residents will be moving to facilities appropriate to their needs.

Oireachtas delegation to raise Ibrahim Halawa case during visit to Egypt

A cross-party delegation from the Oireachtas is to visit Ibrahim Halawa in jail during a four day visit to Egypt.

The group led by the Ceann Comhairle will travel to Egypt today for a series of meetings, where the case of the young Irish man who has been imprisoned there since August of 2013 will be discussed.

The group were invited by Dr Ali Abdel Aal, speaker of the House of Representatives of Egypt.

In a statement, the Oireachtas says the purpose of the visit is to discuss parliamentary relations and foster bilateral cooperation in the areas of foreign relations, communications, agriculture, trade, transport and tourism.

Donald Trump hits out at "Hillary flunky" Meryl Streep after Golden Globes speech

Donald Trump has attacked Oscar-winner Meryl Streep, calling her "over-rated" and a "Hillary flunky who lost big".

His comments on social media came after the actress criticised Mr Trump's impression of a disabled reporter during his campaign for the presidency, saying it "kind of broke my heart" in her Golden Globes acceptance speech last night.

The billionaire, who will become President on 20 January, was apparently doing an impression of Serge Kovaleski when he waved his arms around erratically during a rally.

Defending himself on Twitter, Mr Trump said he "never 'mocked' a disable reporter", adding that he "would never do that".

U2 to play Croke Park this July

U2 have confirmed they will be bringing their Joshua Tree tour to Croke Park this summer.

30 years since the album was first released, the group will hit GAA headquarters on July 22nd.

They will be supported by Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, with the former Oasis star saying “it will be both a pleasure and an honour to play my part in what still remains the greatest show on earth".

Their website says the tour will kick off in Canada's Vancouver on 12th May before arriving in Europe on the 8th of July.
