Claire Lambe and Sinead Lynch qualify for double sculls final

Claire Lambe and Sinead Lynch have finished third in their semi-final of the Women's Lightweight Double Sculls.

The pair will progress to the final, which will take place on Friday afternoon in Rio.

They finished with a time of 7.18:24, behind winners Netherlands and second placed Canada, but ahead of the Danish team in fourth place.

Lambe and Lynch finished second in their heat earlier this week to advance to the semi-final, but improved on that performance today to clinch third spot and qualify for the final.

Their strong performance today was fast enough that they would have qualified as the winners of the first semi-final, which was run at a slower pace.

There was further good news for the Irish rowing contingent on Friday afternoon as the brothers from Skibbereen, Gary and Paul O'Donovan, also qualified for the Men's Double Sculls final, finishing third in their semi-final.

There is a very short turnaround time for the Irish teams to perform in the finals on Friday, but the strong performances from both teams suggest that they're more than able to make the cut.
