Bayern have not bid for Leroy Sane, says club CEO

Bayern Munich insist they've not yet made a formal bid for Manchester City winger Leroy Sane.

Reports last month suggested the German champions had offered 80-million Euro for the 23-year-old but club CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says they're a 'long way' from submitting a bid.

"We have not yet submitted an offer for Leroy Sane," Rummenigge told Sportbild. "We are still a long way from this point".

Bayern are looking to bolster their wide attacking options after the departures of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery while they've opted to allow James Rodriquez return to Real Madrid following his two seasons on loan at the Allianz Arena.

They're likely to miss out on England winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, who is reportedly poised to sign a new contract at Chelsea.

While Rummenigge's not convinced that Sane would push for a move back to the Bundesliga.

"Initially the player has to decide if he could imagine joining Bayern. Once that is the case then we will go into specific negotiations with Manchester City.

"Obviously Leroy has not yet decided. I find him an exciting player both in relation to his football qualities and his character."

Sane has stalled on signing a new contract at the Etihad after struggling to hold down a starting place in City's team last season, scoring 16 goals in 47 games.

He was the Premier League champions' Young Player of the Season in 2018 but has found himself behind Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and David Silva in the City pecking order.

Sane has not always enjoyed the best of relationships with City boss Pep Guardiola, who has questioned the player's attitude. Sane sees he's future in the number ten position, but Guardiola believes that he's currently more effective in wide areas.

"Leroy, I think, is the best player in the world wide and making runs in behind and these kind of actions.

“We prefer to use him where he is strong. His strength, I believe, is wider – one against one. There I think he is an incredible player.”
