New England QB Cam Newton has tested positive for COVID-19

The NFL has confirmed that tomorrow's match between New England and reigning champions Kansas City has been rescheduled after the Patriots' Cam Newton tested positive for coronavirus.

The Chiefs' backup quarter-back Jordan Ta’amu has also picked up COVID-19 and the league will push back the meeting of the last two NFL champions to either Monday or Tuesday night.

All of the close contacts to Cam Newton in the Patriots' squad have since returned negative results.

“Late last night, we received notice that a Patriots player tested positive for COVID-19," New England announced in a statement. "The player immediately entered self-quarantine.

“Several additional players, coaches and staff who have been in close contact with the player received point of care tests this morning and all were negative for Covid-19.

“We are in close consultation with the NFL, as well as our team of independent doctors and specialists, and will follow their guidance regarding our scheduled trip to Kansas City and game against the Chiefs. The health and safety of our team, as well as our opponent, are of highest priority.”

The NFL say they'll make a decision on the fixture in the next 24-hours with Monday and Tuesday both possible dates for the re-fixture.

“In consultation with infectious disease experts, both clubs are working closely with the NFL and the (NFL Players’ Association) to evaluate multiple close contacts, perform additional testing and monitor developments.”
