Colin Kaepernick could find his way back to the sport with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Their coach Anthony Lynn says the quarter-back is on the team's workout list.
Kaepernick has been out of the NFL for the past three years after being among the first athletes to kneel during the American national anthem.
Lynn says Kaepernick is the style of quarter-back they'd be interested in, but admits to not having spoken to the 32-year old yet.
The Chargers currently have three quarter-backs on their roster in Tyrod Taylor, Justin Herbert and Easton Stick.
"It would be something I think any team would have to explore with a talent of that caliber that is available under these circumstances", Lynn said about taking a look at the former San Francisco 49ers man.
"I know he has a high IQ at the position. It comes down to physical shape and his ability to do what he does. You can figure out real quick where he is in his career after an intense workout."
"If he wants to resume his career in the NFL, then it's obviously going to take a team to make that decision", NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told ESPN earlier in the week.
He added, "But I welcome that, support the club making that decision and encourage them to do that."
Lynn did stipulate that he is in no hurry to displace any of his current quarter-backs, "I’m very confident and happy with the three quarterbacks that I have but you can never have too many people waiting on the runway,” he said.
"At the end of the day we have to put together a roster we have to feel good about. He has to make sense."
Should Kaepernick not find a new franchise by the time the new season starts, Goodell says he would welcome his insights to "help us and guide us and help us to make better decisions" on complex issues.
