McIlroy makes late recovery at TPC to make cut

Rory McIlroy flirted with danger with a disastrous front nine yesterday at The Players Championship at Sawgrass but recovered well to make the cut. McIlroy dropped 6 shots in the space of 5 holes on yesterday’s front nine, which added to the three shots dropped in the last 8 holes of Thursday’s round to leave the Northern Irishman in a precarious position and facing missing the cut at the Sawgrass for the fourth time in his five visits to The Player’s Championship.

The back nine was entirely different beast for McIlroy however, as he got back to the club house in 10 shots less than he went out in to make it home with a 2 over 74 that leaves him on level par.

"I'm really proud of myself that I was able to do that," McIlroy told The Guardian. "It's not the position I want to be in, battling back to make the cut, but at least I'm in for the weekend. At least there's good golf in there somewhere, and hopefully I can continue that into the weekend, what I showed on the back nine there today."

Graeme McDowell is 8 shots off the lead ahead of Day 3 of The Players Championship at Sawgrass.

McDowell is on 4 under par following a round of 71.

Martin Kaymer leads the tournament on 12 under par, 1 shot ahead of Jordan Speith.
