Roy Keane has questioned the merit of including the ‘Class of 92’ in a new Manchester United backroom set-up by default.
Keane believes the new Manchester United manager, expected to be Louis Van Gaal, does not necessarily need to immediately bring in the famed class of 92, including Phil Neville, who served as a coach during David Moyes’ tenure at the club and remains there following the Scot’s departure.
“It doesn’t rock my boat,” Keane said to the Daily Star Sunday. “People go on about the old Liverpool boot-room and all this, but no it doesn’t do anything for me.
“If it guarantees success, I would go for it. But does it guarantee success? No. I don’t fall for all that.
“There have been coaches over the years at United when I was there – Jim Ryan had the United connection, Brian McClair had the United connection, Mick Phelan was there, and Brian Kidd.
“It is good to have that, but I don’t think it is a must-have — particularly if you think you have to have three or four of them because they came through the youth team together.”
Keane paid close attention to Neville, saying he felt the former Manchester United and Everton man might have been best served by leaving the club with Moyes.
“David Moyes brought in Phil Neville and everybody said it is great to have Phil Neville.
“I would like to ask, ‘What did Phil bring to the party?’
“And when David Moyes left, why didn’t Phil leave with him? Because David brought him in with him. So, interesting.
“Should Phil have walked with him?
“I don’t know, you would have to ask Phil but I know what I would have done. But we are all different,” Keane added.
