Graham Hunter on small positive steps in the fight against racism in Spanish football

Listen to the full interview above via the podcast

Graham Hunter believes the fallout from the Dani Alves racism incident has been positive.

The Barcelona full-back had a banana thrown at him against Villarreal yesterday but chose to eat it in an act of defiance.

He has received a huge deal of support globally for his response and Graham told us that he saw positive signs from the way that players came out on the issue.

"That shows unity. That makes people unite with the players against the racists. It's a small forward step. The biggest forward step is that at a relatively rural club, the fans went and identified this idiot, this racist, to the security people and to the club. For that reason the club have identified him, they've taken away his season ticket and banned him for life within less than 24 hours of the incident happening," said Graham who believes education is key.

He also contrasted that response to the racist abuse aimed at Real Madrid's Marcelo after a match with Atletico.

Graham sees a slight turning of the tide even in the Spanish media which had often played down such incidents.
