With Carlo Ancelotti out, what's next for Bayern Munich?

Just a couple of weeks ago, we chatted to Rafa Honigstein about the troubles Carlo Ancelotti was facing at Bayern Munich - amid links to a new managerial appointment in the shape of the youthful Julian Nagelsmann of Hoffenheim.

Well, today, Ancelotti's spell in charge of the German giants came to an end, shortly after the 3-0 loss to Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League group stages and off the back of poor results domestically in the Bundesliga.

Honigstein joined us again to discuss the whole new situation for Bayern as they seek a replacement for the experienced Italian and get to the heart of what Ancelotti got wrong in Bavaria.

"He's essentially fallen victim to his inability to man manage the dressing room because there has been too much unease and unhappiness, too many players not really trusting him to take them and the team forward," said Honigstein of a manager who had had an excellent reputation for managing egos and high profile players within a dressing room.

For now, his assistant Willy Sagnol, a former Bayern defender, will take temporary charge before a permanent addition is made. It's anticipated that a bright young manager in the Nagelsmann mould - ideally the man himself - will be sought out.

"Well, it is very early for him," said Honigstein of Nagelsmann.

"At the same time his success since taking over at Hoffenheim in January of 2016 has been so remarkable and Bayern even before that, had wanted to get him as a youth coach because his reputation was such that they felt that he is one of the guys that they can't miss out on.

"I think what's happening here is that they're afraid that if they don't go for him now, they might miss out on the most promising talent of his generation."
